Summary

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer revolves around the youthful adventures of the novel's schoolboy protagonist, Thomas Sawyer, whose reputation precedes him for causing mischief and strife。 Tom lives with his Aunt Polly, half-brother Sid, and cousin Mary in the quaint town of St。 Petersburg, just off the shore of the Mississippi River。 St。 Petersburg is described as a typical small-town atmosphere where the Christian faith is predominant, the social network is close-knit, and familiarity resides。

Unlike his brother Sid, Tom receives "lickings" from his Aunt Polly; ever the mischief-maker, would rather play hooky than attend school and often sneaks out his bedroom window at night to adventure with his friend, Huckleberry Finn the town's social outcast。 Tom, despite his dread of schooling, is extremely clever and would normally get away with his pranks if Sid were not such a "tattle-tale。"

As punishment for skipping school to go swimming, Aunt Polly assigns Tom the chore of whitewashing the fence surrounding the house。 In a brilliant scheme, Tom is able to con the neighborhood boys into completing the chore for him, managing to convince them of the joys of whitewashing。 At school, Tom is equally as flamboyant, and attracts attention by chasing other boys, yelling, and running around。 With his usual antics, Tom attempts to catch the eye of Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, and persuades her to get "engaged" by kissing him。 But their romance collapses when she learns Tom has been "engaged" previously to Amy Lawrence。 Shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness the murder of Dr。 Robinson。

"What's gone with that boy,  I wonder? You TOM!"
No answer。
The old lady pulled her spectacles down and looked over them about the room; then she put them up and looked out under them。 She seldom or never looked through them for so small a thing as a boy; they were her state pair, the pride of her heart, and were built for "style," not service—she could have seen through a pair of stove-lids just as well。 She looked perplexed for a moment, and then said, not fiercely, but still loud enough for the furniture to hear:
"Well, I lay if I get hold of you I'll—"
She did not finish, for by this time she was bending down and punching under the bed with the broom, and so she needed breath to punctuate the punches with。 She resurrected nothing but the cat。
"I never did see the beat of that boy!"

Una storia di monelli con il sapore dei tempi andati。Il libro è carino e spensierato, ma non molto di più。

A DNF from me。 Normally, I give DNFS one star but I didn't particularly hate this book。 It just wasn't for me。 I will say that Mark Twain is a great writer。 He sure knows how to weave a sentence。 But unfortunately I didn't care for the story or characters and that is vital for me to like a book even if it is well-written。 I heard there's a long debate on who is the better author: Charles Dickens or Mark Twain。 For me personally, I'm team Dickens all the way。 I'm sorry to any Twain fans on goodre A DNF from me。 Normally, I give DNFS one star but I didn't particularly hate this book。 It just wasn't for me。 I will say that Mark Twain is a great writer。 He sure knows how to weave a sentence。 But unfortunately I didn't care for the story or characters and that is vital for me to like a book even if it is well-written。 I heard there's a long debate on who is the better author: Charles Dickens or Mark Twain。 For me personally, I'm team Dickens all the way。 I'm sorry to any Twain fans on goodreads。 He just wasn't for me。 。。。more

Great book。 A nourishment for life。 Portraying a life that we all long to get back but cannot go back。 Thats the pleasure of literature。 It throws light into the dark recess of long lost phase of one's self。 Reliving the past in the pages of this book。 We all have the shades of Tom, Huck, Joe, Sid, Becky。 Great book。 A nourishment for life。 Portraying a life that we all long to get back but cannot go back。 Thats the pleasure of literature。 It throws light into the dark recess of long lost phase of one's self。 Reliving the past in the pages of this book。 We all have the shades of Tom, Huck, Joe, Sid, Becky。 。。。more

I enjoyed the story and particularly the view of the life of 1840s America。 The mixture of archaic and slang English made some parts of the book fairly challenging to understand。

I feel that I would have enjoyed this book more when I was younger。 Maybe thirty years ago。 It’s great literature and the story takes us back to a different time, which I enjoyed。 I was smiling and chuckling at some comments and predicaments。 I am going to say that it read and felt more like a boys book。 Great ready and I can finally say I’ve read Mark Twain。

The Good: Poetic and whimsical writing - a true mythologization of American boyhood in the old days of the country。 Countless one-liners and paragraphs that will make you smile or even laugh out loud。 Exceptional demonstration of timeless themes related to human nature, particularly the differences between childhood and adulthood。 All in all, an impressive piece of art。The Bad: Although in all likelihood intentional, much of the story lacks a central plot and therefore at times the book drags al The Good: Poetic and whimsical writing - a true mythologization of American boyhood in the old days of the country。 Countless one-liners and paragraphs that will make you smile or even laugh out loud。 Exceptional demonstration of timeless themes related to human nature, particularly the differences between childhood and adulthood。 All in all, an impressive piece of art。The Bad: Although in all likelihood intentional, much of the story lacks a central plot and therefore at times the book drags along at a very slow pace。 Mark has no problem spending just as much time on the haphazard or less relevant expeditions of the boys as he does on those central to the overarching storylines of the summer。 While this may add to the charm of the book, it makes it more difficult to stay engaged。 It is also relatively one dimensional。Other Thoughts: I listened to the audiobook narrated by Nick Offerman, which was fantastic and I suspect added to the delightful character of the book。Ten Point Scale: 7/10 。。。more

Adorable! And extra special because my mom loves it so。 I think that’s why I’m torn between 4 and 5 stars。 I definitely enjoyed Mark Twain’s style and will be reading more of his works。

I remember really enjoying this back in school, so I thought I'd read it again。It's okay。 It really drags in a few places。 I like Huck Finn a lot。 Tom can sometimes be a bit of a punk, but by the end I liked him。I think my pleasant memory of this book comes from the old TV movie from the '70s I used to watch growing up。 I remember really enjoying this back in school, so I thought I'd read it again。It's okay。 It really drags in a few places。 I like Huck Finn a lot。 Tom can sometimes be a bit of a punk, but by the end I liked him。I think my pleasant memory of this book comes from the old TV movie from the '70s I used to watch growing up。 。。。more

I loved this book!!It was very easy for me to relate to Tom's mischievous, naughty, street smart yet innocent lifestyle。 Edgy pranks, the need for acceptance and respect, urge to be loved and the boyish pride to return it, these are all the emotional rollercoasters one goes through childhood which builds a person much earlier than your 18th birthday, getting your driver's licence or finishing your national service。The impact of imagination throughout the book made me very nostalgic。Nowadays peop I loved this book!!It was very easy for me to relate to Tom's mischievous, naughty, street smart yet innocent lifestyle。 Edgy pranks, the need for acceptance and respect, urge to be loved and the boyish pride to return it, these are all the emotional rollercoasters one goes through childhood which builds a person much earlier than your 18th birthday, getting your driver's licence or finishing your national service。The impact of imagination throughout the book made me very nostalgic。Nowadays people put special AR goggles for self-entertainment within a few square meters of their living rooms。 For us growing up, the whole world was one big augmented reality。 All we had to do is let imagination do its thing and anywhere we went, we were entertained。 That is exactly why this book resonates with me。 Because it brings me to those days of reckless storytelling and making stories up as you go。It is a bit difficult for me to imagine this piece (or other similar works for that matter) resonating with readers who grew up in the comfort of their first or second world privileges。 There is no argument here because the fact is that growing up and having fun today is not nearly the same as it used to be。So this book was a great reminder for where some of us came from。 。。。more

A humorous story about a young rascal named Tom Sawyer and his friends, including Huckleberry Fin。 Mark Twain has a wonderful vocabulary and uses it to really capture the excitement and importance one felt over every little game or event as a child。 A great story for all ages though younger readers may struggle with the erudite language。

Such a heartfelt and warm read, especially that I used to watch the animated tv show when I was younger and remembering the scenes was very nostalgic and beautiful。 The book follows the adventures of a mischievous boy called Tom Sawyer, you get to witness the ideas that take place in his mind and how they lead him into a path of adventure, that keeps you on your toes, with added laughter and warmth。

A classic childhood story that I think adults might appreciate even more than kids do。 I’m glad to have read this for the first time in my twenties。 Though it lacks the more pointed commentary on race & society that’s featured in Huck Finn, it’s still a great satirical read, and laugh-out-loud funny in many places。
